FAQ's

What is a skin test and why do I need one ?

A skin test is carried out to determine if a person is allergic to a hair colourant. Most permanent and semi-permanent colours contain a chemical called Paraphenylenediamine (PPD) which is known as irritant or allergen. This is the reason for most reactions to hair dye.

We are required to carry out a skin test 48 hours prior to a Hair colouring service to reduce the risk of an allergic reaction. This test is compulsory and is necessary for our guest’s safety. The skin test is painless and is offered at every complimentary consultation. Please contact us if you require any further information on skin testing.

Why do I need a consultation before a color change or restyle?

We strongly recommend that all guests pop in to see a member of our team for a complimentary consultation prior to a hair service that involves changing their current look. This allows us to carry out all of the necessary tests and discuss the best options available. It also allows us to allocate enough time and to give a more accurate quote for the service.

To book a complimentary consultation, please contact a member of our team at The Boathouse Hair & Beauty rooms.

What is Balayage?

Balayage is a French word meaning “sweeping”. It is a free hand painting technique where the colourist uses long sweeping strokes to create a seamless blend between highlights and the natural base colour. The Balayage service often takes longer to apply so the price for the service is often higher than conventional highlights. However, it achieves a more natural finish and requires less visits to the salon for root applications.
